Wealth managers and other financial advisers in the EU have had to comply with the Green MiFID sustainability assessment¹ rules since August 2022; however, the level of supervisory attention is about to increase. In October 2023, the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) announced an enhanced focus on regulating Green MiFID implementation for wealth managers.

¹“Green MiFID” refers to changes made to the suitability requirements under the Markets in Financial Instruments Directive that stipulates that wealth advisers should take account of their clients’ sustainability preferences before recommending financial products. Similar rules were also implemented as part of the Insurance Distribution Directive (IDD).
